The First Step to Choosing a Supplement

Traceability has been a guiding light for the Nutrilite™ brand ever since my father bought his first farm over 80 years ago. And for good reason. It builds trust.

The more time I spend with my youngest granddaughter Hazel Honey, the more I find myself brushing up on my knowledge of kids’ nutrition. I suppose it’s a proud grandpa thing.

In 1934, my father developed what is believed to be the first plant-based multivitamin-multimineral in North America, earning him the moniker “Vita-Man.” Today, the Nutrilite brand is a global leader in wellness solutions. While there have been plenty of twists and turns through the decades, one constant has remained: A commitment to transparency.

One of the most popular topics on my blog surrounds our traceability program. If you’re unfamiliar with our traceability program, it’s a meticulous nine-step process that helps ensure our products are pure, safe and effective.

Over the past year, I’ve heard folks ask when tours of the Nutrilite Center for Optimal Health at our Buena Park campus will be starting back up. Our brand ambassadors are eager to return to in-person tours, too.

As the saying goes, food isn’t nutrition until you eat it. The same could be said for taking (or as I’d say “eating”) Nutrilite™ supplements.

I continue to marvel at the innovation that takes place at our farms. To me, it’s a key reason why consumers trust the Nutrilite™ brand. Our farms are an impressive ecosystem that combines thousands of acres of fertile farmland with sustainable organic farming practices.

When you ask Kevin Gellenbeck, Ph.D., about carotenoids, plan to settle in for a master class. For over 30 years, the good doctor has been researching the wonders of carotenoids and the plants that make them.

Watching Hazel reminds me how fortunate I am for the blessings my parents shared with me over the years, including the importance of good nutrition right from the start. With every decade, the Nutrilite brand has certainly been there for me whether I was fueling big dreams or simply persevering.

As I sit in my office, my mind drifts to my father. You may be surprised to learn that he was one of the nearly 500 million people — about one in three — caught in the crosshairs of the 1918 flu pandemic. Like many young healthy adults, he landed in the hospital, where this deadly flu almost cost him his life.

I remember my father telling me about the first time he became aware of the concept of sustainability, although he called it “taking care of your environment.” He became conscious of it almost 100 years ago when he first traveled to China and ventured into the interior. Sadly, it was an idea born out of tragedy.

When people visit Trout Lake Farm, they are often surprised at all the behind-the-scene action that takes place to ensure a steady supply of plant material for Nutrilite® products. They’re also intrigued by all the attention the team gives to research and innovation to stay on the leading edge.

I had a chance to return to the Amway Botanical Research Center (ABRC) in Wuxi to learn about the latest research updates, including one that had me thinking about my early days as a young scientist.

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to China where I spoke about the future of the Nutrilite brand. Once the plane hit the tarmac, we were off and running for nine days with scheduled events in Shanghai, Wuxi, Beijing and Guangzhou, punctuated only by travel days.
Reflections from Dr. Sam
Personal wellbeing isn’t just about you or me. It’s about the people around us, our family, friends and the greater community. Taking care of yourself, nurturing your connection with nature, and making an effort to transform challenges into opportunities, will help lead us to a future where we can all happily coexist.
Wellness has always been central to my story. When my father, Carl F. Rehnborg, founded Nutrilite in 1934, his goal was to help people everywhere take responsibility for their health, their wealth, and the planet. Even then, he knew that all these things were interconnected. His vision shaped my own path—a journey grounded in curiosity, science, and a passion for helping others live well.

There’s a long history of farming innovation at Nutrilite. It started when my father, Carl F. Rehnborg, began growing alfalfa in the 1930s before we even knew to call it organic. He was looking for the purest, most nutritious botanicals, and he already knew that they needed to be grown sustainably and naturally, without any synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. That same belief continues to guide us today.
